Introducing Founder Wellness at Innovation City

Introducing Founder Wellness at Innovation City

Sandra Buckingham

There's a particular kind of exhaustion that comes with building a business. The endless decisions, the responsibility for other people's livelihoods, the pressure to grow, the uncertainty about what comes next. And somewhere between the investor meetings, client deadlines and late-night emails, taking care of yourself slips further down the priority list.

Entrepreneurship has long celebrated the hustle. We admire founders who work through weekends, survive on little sleep and somehow manage to keep everything moving. Being busy has become a badge of honour, and admitting that you're struggling can feel uncomfortably close to admitting defeat.

But even some of the world's most celebrated tech founders have discovered that success comes with its own pressures.

When success becomes its own burden

When Steve Jobs was fired from Apple in 1985, he initially saw it as a devastating failure. Yet, looking back in his famous 2005 Stanford commencement address, he described how losing the weight of expectation allowed him to rediscover his creativity.

"The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again."

Jobs went on to establish NeXT and help build Pixar before eventually returning to Apple. His experience offers an interesting perspective on something entrepreneurs rarely discuss: the psychological weight of success itself.

When you're responsible for building a business, it's easy to become so consumed by keeping it moving that you lose sight of why you started.

And while most of us won't experience the extraordinary highs and lows of Steve Jobs, the underlying question is familiar. How do you stay ambitious without allowing ambition to consume you?

The people behind the businesses

At Innovation City, we spend a great deal of time talking about what it takes to build successful businesses. We bring together founders, investors, entrepreneurs and industry leaders to share ideas about growth, innovation, technology and leadership.

But behind every business is a person. And that person doesn't stop being human when they become a founder. They still experience stress, uncertainty, self-doubt and exhaustion. They still need time to think, rest, reconnect and occasionally step away from the demands of running a company.

Yet in entrepreneurial circles, the conversation is often dominated by productivity, performance and the next milestone. We talk about building sustainable businesses, but perhaps we should spend more time talking about building sustainable ways of working, too.

Because looking after yourself shouldn't be something you get around to once everything else is done.

Introducing Innovation City's Founder Wellness Event Series

That's why we're launching the Founder Wellness Event Series, a new monthly initiative dedicated to the wellbeing of the people who build, lead and grow businesses.

Once a month, we'll create space for conversations and experiences that don't necessarily revolve around revenue, funding or growth strategies, but instead focus on the human side of entrepreneurship.

The series will explore everything from resilience, mental wellbeing and stress management to mindfulness, self-awareness and finding healthier ways to navigate the pressures of modern working life.

Some sessions will be practical and thought-provoking. Others will offer an opportunity to slow down, recharge and experience something completely different.

And while we're calling it the Founder Wellness Event Series, everyone is welcome. You don't have to be a founder, or even an Innovation City member, to join us. Whether you're an entrepreneur, executive, creative, freelancer or simply someone navigating a demanding working life, these sessions are for you.

We're also looking ahead to 2027 and inviting wellness practitioners, coaches, psychologists, facilitators and other experts to become part of the series.
