Did you know? You don't need to be an Innovation City member to enjoy a great coffee, a freshly made lunch or a little Swedish-inspired hospitality in the heart of Cape Town!

Tucked inside Innovation City just off Kloof Street is Fika Café, a sunny, air-conditioned meeting place that has quietly become part of the daily rhythm of the building. And while many people know Innovation City as a hub for entrepreneurs, innovators and businesses, fewer may realise that its café is open to absolutely everyone.

The name Fika comes from the Swedish tradition of taking time out for coffee, something sweet and, most importantly, good company. It's a ritual built around the idea that some of the best conversations happen when we take a moment away from our desks.

Four years on, Fika has evolved from a simple canteen into a fully stocked café, with soft music, coffee brewing and a steady stream of business people stopping in for freshly made sandwiches and salads, and plenty of grab-and-go options, from pies and pastries to muffins and snacks.

At the heart of Fika are café manager Jabulani Mapfumo and barista Ottis Jeke, the familiar faces behind the counter who keep things running and make everyone feel welcome.

The menu has grown considerably over the years. There are breakfast oats, fruit and yoghurt for early starters, alongside fresh salads, wraps, quesadillas, pastries and snacks. And then there's what we confidently believe is one of Cape Town's best chicken mayo sandwiches, served on freshly baked sourdough.

Much of what makes Fika special comes down to the suppliers behind its food and coffee.

The sourdough comes from Silo Bakery, a small independent bakery in Pinelands, while the pastries are supplied by Manuello's, an artisan bakery tucked away on a farm in Stellenbosch.

Coffee comes courtesy of Smak Coffee Co., a family-run Cape Town roastery whose name, rather fittingly, means "taste" or "flavour" in Swedish. Whether you prefer a flat white, cappuccino or a straightforward Americano, there's a choice of full-cream, low-fat and fat-free milk, as well as ButtaNutt almond and oat alternatives - at no extra cost.

And Tuesdays have become something of an occasion thanks to Toastie Tuesday, when a different toasted sandwich joins the menu each week. From classic combinations to a good old South African braaibroodjie, there's always something new to try.

A Meeting Place, Not Just a Members' Café

Of course, Fika serves the Innovation City community, but its doors are just as open to neighbours, visitors and anyone passing through Kloof Street.

You don't need a membership, an event invitation or a meeting booked upstairs. You can simply walk in, order a coffee, settle down for lunch or meet someone for a catch-up.

For Innovation City members and meeting-room guests, there's the added convenience of ordering via WhatsApp using QR codes in the boardrooms. Fika also caters for external events hosted at Innovation City, bringing its food, coffee and hospitality to gatherings of all sizes.

There's something rather fitting about a café called Fika sitting at the heart of a building dedicated to connecting people. Some conversations are planned weeks in advance. Others begin over a cup of coffee and lead somewhere entirely unexpected.

And sometimes, of course, you just want a really good toastie!
